FAQ

When someone passes away, there are several steps that need to be taken. We have carefully put together a guide that you can fine here. If you’d rather prefer talking to us in person – contact us and one of our funeral arrangers can talk you through the next steps.

 

If your loved one passes away at home, the first step will be to give the doctor of the deceased a call. The doctor will be able to determine whether or not the coroner needs to be informed. If there is no need to contact the coroner, the doctor will supply you with a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death. Thereafter, you will need to contact the funeral director, that’s where we come in. More info

The hospital or care home team will liaise with the doctor on your behalf, and your doctor will advise you on the next steps, and when to give us a call. More info

If the coroner is involved, prepare yourself for the process to take a bit longer. If this is the case, contact us and we can help talk you through the next steps. We will arrange for your loved one to be taken into our care where we will carry out all your personal requests with the utmost respect and dignity. More info

Other than doctors, friends and family we strongly advise using ‘Tell Us Once” available through GOV.UK. This allows you to report a death to most government organisations in one go. More info

Death is usually registered by the next of kin or a relative of the deceased. However, if there are no relatives, a person who was with the deceased at the time of their death or someone who is arranging the funeral can register the death. More info

The registrar will contact you by phone to make a telephone appointment with you to register the death. They will need certain key information including:

  • Full name, gender, date and country of birth
  • Occupation: current or previous
  • Address and postcode
  • Parental names and occupations
  • Marital status with partner(s) name, date of birth and occupation

    Once the registration has taken place, the death certificate will be sent out to you by post. More info

In the event of a UK resident passing away while abroad, the first step will be for the deceased’s travel insurance provider to appoint a local funeral director. The local funeral director should work alongside the family to arrange transport of your loved one and necessary documentation back to the UK. In the absence of valid travel insurance, you will need to instruct a local funeral director to arrange care before returning to the UK and cover the costs of repatriation.

We pride ourselves on our expertise in repatriation and ensure that every case is handled with respect and care. We treat each repatriation case individually to ensure that we cover all the details and the process goes as smoothly as possible. However, it’s important to mention that invariably, much paperwork and consultation is required, so be prepared for this. We are also familiar with the specific requirements of various countries around the world, some of which can take over two weeks to complete. During this period, the deceased will remain in our care. Once the deceased has been returned to your chosen destination, funeral arrangements can be finalised in the normal manner in that country.

We believe that the best way to repatriate ashes is to travel with them. If this is not an option, they may need to be sent by air as cargo. Currently, courier and postal services no longer repatriate ashes. Each country has its own rules for the repatriation of ashes from the UK. We can assist with all necessary documentation and practical arrangements. You will always require at least a death certificate, a certificate of cremation, and a customs disclaimer. On arrival at the destination country, expect to complete a standard customs form. It is also worth checking with your transport provider to find out how you can carry the ashes safely and securely.
